Summer Programs Offered by The Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies

            The Frances A. Karnes Center for Gifted Studies will host four exciting programs for children and youth during the summer of 2019. This year’s programs focus on a pioneering spirit in all the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) fields. Descriptions of each program and the deadlines to apply are noted below.

Day Program for Young Gifted Children:

June 10-14, 2019 from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon each day.  Open to intellectually gifted and academically talented students in PreKindergarten (age 4) through 3rd Grade, this program challenges students to stretch their imagination and explore a wide variety of topics.  Deadline to begin an application: May 15, 2019

Leadership Studies Program:

June 17-22, 2019.  The Leadership Studies program is open to ALL students who were enrolled in 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grades during the 2018/2019 school year.  Courses begin with Leadership I which teaches the basic characteristics of leadership.  In their second year, Leadership II students learn about group dynamics and situational leadership.  Finally, in Leadership III students study the processes of entrepreneurship and non-profit organizations. All students take home their own platform for leadership that helps them to make a difference in their community, school, or faith-based organization.  Deadline to begin an application: May 15, 2019.

Summer Gifted Studies Program:

June 23-28, 2019.  The Summer Gifted Studies Program is open to students in grades 4-8 who have performed at or above the 91st percentile on either an individually administered IQ test OR a nationally normed achievement test.  With courses in topics such as engineering design, medical innovations, movie special effects, dance, debate, and sports, all students are sure to find a course that meets their needs for intellectual curiosity and creativity.  Deadline to begin an application: May 15, 2019.

Summer Program for Academically Talented Youth (SPATY):

July7-26, 2019.  Students who have taken the ACT or SAT as early as the 7th grade are invited to attend this three-week program that helps them to build their academic prowess.  With courses in astrophysics, advanced debate, human biology, psychology, accelerated mathematics, and creative writing, this program will challenge youth to focus on their academic growth and potential for collegiate level academics and research. Deadline to begin an application: June 15, 2019.

Montessori Preschool Summer Camp

The Children’s House Montessori School of Ocean Springs is offering 4 weeks of a Montessori based and led Summer Camp! Children must be 3-6 years in age and completely potty trained. Summer Kids College at Pearl River Community College

Diving into Dolphins (Younger)

This interactive camp will be led by Marine Biologists from Gulf Coast Research Laboratory. Campers will learn about dolphin anatomy and habits.

Go Wild will teach campers about animals native to Mississippi and conservation efforts to protect them. Animal classifications and habitats will be discussed. There will be opportunities for live animal encounters

Robotics 1

Robotics I allows participants to take the plunge with beginning computer programming. Campers will test their skills while completing various missions.

First Aid Training will teach campers the information and skills necessary to help in emergency medical situations. Participants will learn how to confidently react and provide assistance

Campers will step behind the scenes to learn video camera components and operational procedures while creating a film short.

City of Biloxi Summer Playground Program

The Summer Playground program is an eight to nine week program which begins one week after Biloxi Public Schools let out for the summer. The program ends one week before children begin the new school year.

Sites are Donal Snyder Community Center, Jeff Davis, Lopez, North Bay, North Woolmarket, and Popp’s Ferry and Woolmarket Elementary.  The schools are upon approval.

Children have the opportunity to attend field trips along the Gulf Coast, participate in arts & crafts and organized games.

This program is open to all children ages 5 – 14. 
Teen camp is for ages 12 – 14 and Sun Camp is for children with physical and mental disabilities.

Camp will be held Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. with extended care, Latch Key, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Camp begins: Monday, June 3, 2019

Camp ends: Friday, July 26, 2019
