St. Stanislaus Residential and Day Camp

Camp Stanislaus effectively combines recreational and learning activities during its four-week operation.  Activities may include but are not limited to:

Sailing, water-skiing, archery, baseball, basketball, football, dodge ball, arts and crafts, swimming, fishing, marine biology, canoeing, volleyball, tennis, beach activities, ultimate Frisbee, weightlifting, barbecues, skit nights, and capture the flag.  Activities vary from week to week, so not every activity is done during each camp session.  Our major activities are sailing, water-skiing and fishing; these do occur each week.  For a more detailed look at activities click here.

Marine Biology at St. Stanislaus

Marine Biology has been a popular camp elective since it was introduced in 2012 and now campers will have the opportunity to attend the new Marine Biology Camp.  This camp will take place in the Marine Biology lab, beach in front of school and our pier.  This camp will be a fun educational experience for boys and girls ages 9-15.  The camp will consist of four parts:

Fieldwork on the beach:

  • Biological sampling using seine and cast nets
  • Sediment and benthic sampling using yabbie pumps and sieves
  • Plankton pulls using nets, with microscope analysis and identification in the lab
  • Rocky coast exploration using hand nets
  • Marine debris removal and data collection
  • Beach scavenger hunts

 Fieldwork on the Pier:

  • Oyster gardening
  • Water quality testing
  • Fishing with line and tackle
  • Crabbing

Lab work:

  • Dissections
  • Observations under the microscope
  • Observations in the aquarium
  • Fish Prints

Classroom:

  • Guest Speakers

Marine Biology Camp will be from Monday, July 8th – Friday July 12thand each session will go from 8:15 – 11:45.  The cost to attend this week is $200.  Drop off and pick up will be at Saint Stanislaus in front of the main school building which is located at 304 South Beach Blvd., Bay Saint Louis, MS 39520.

Angler Camp

Fishing, fishing, fishing and even more fishing at the week long summer camp. Young anglers fish everyday with our expert saltwater fishing educational team. Spend a week with our marine educators and learn a lifetime of saltwater fishing techniques. Participants explore fish biology and behavior and how weather, wind, moon and tides affect fishing. During the week, anglers will learn how to throw a net to catch bait, how to tag and release fish, and how to target speckled trout, redfish and flounder. Participants will fish a variety of saltwater habitats aboard vessels and at the islands.

Grades 7-12 – $400 / June 3-7, 10-14, 17-21, 24-28

In Shaggy’s Angler Camp you will:

  • Master the basics of fishing the Gulf Coast for speckled trout, redfish, flounder, white trout, and other fish.
  • Interact with GCRL scientists in the lab and on the water to learn about fish biology and behavior.
  • Learn how weather, wind, moon, and tides affect fishing.
  • Learn to recognize good spots to fish.
  • Find out how to catch your own bait.
  • Learn about conservation and fishing regulations and how to tag a fish.
  • Go fishing on GCRL and chartered vessels.
  • Make your own fishing lures.
  • Learn to clean and cook your catch.

Sea Camp at Gulf Coast Research Lab

Summer 2019 marks the 32nd year for Sea Camp –
Grades:
1-2 — $210

June 3-7, 10-14, 17-21, 24-28
July 8-12
Marine educators provide students with a rich educational experience wrapped up in lots of fun, games and hands-on activities.

Participants explore coastal salt marshes with educators aboard the university research vessel, the Miss Peetsy B. Activities include live animal encounters with coastal wildlife and opportunities to fish, crab, seine and sieve. Students will participate in field trips appropriate for their ages, such as exploring beach habitats or a day at Ship Island.

Registration
Fees are $210 for 1st and 2nd grades, $235 for 3rd and 4th grades and $260 for 5th and 6th grades. Sea Camp registration requires a $50.00 non-refundable deposit.

2019 Sea Camp Schedule During Shark Fest, sharks are caught, tagged, and released as part of an ongoing research program at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory.
Drop-off 7:45-8:00 a.m. and pick-up is between 2:45-3:00 p.m.

Note: For GCRL, Ocean Springs campers, 3rd-6th graders, drop-off on Thursdays is 7:30 a.m. and
pick-up is at 4:45 p.m. to accommodate the trip to Ship Island

Sea Camp participants are put into one of three groups that include activities age appropriate for each of the groups.

Group 1: 1st and 2nd grades
Group 2: 3rd and 4th grades
Group 3: 5th and 6th grades

Shark Fest

Summer will be here before you know it, and registration for 2019 Shark Fest Summer Camp is now open! This hands-on camp gets kids out on the R/V Jim Franks with the opportunity to catch, tag, and release a variety of shark species.
